Chapter 60
The light stretched it’s pale fingers across their bodies as they lay, still in the bed they shared. She stretched subtly, careful not wake him. She simply wanted to look. This was her morning ritual. Everyday she admired him; his face covered with new creases & lines, freckles & scars, and his closely cropped pepper colored hair that was turning more to salt with every passing day. Not that she minded. On more than one occasion, she had found a silver strand or two in her ebony tresses. She would always pluck them or just recolor, but not him. He looked so distinguished. Thirty-five looked so good on him. Too good. Far too good for her to just let him lay there & sleep. No; there was a fire beginning to burn inside of her once again. A fire beginning in the center of her chest & blazing down to places unspeakable. She pressed against him suggestively, effectively stirring him from slumber.
“Good morning.” He said, smiling against her lips. His voice was deep with sleep, his breath still sweet with the smell of her from the night before.
“Hi.” She breathed against his neck. There wasn’t a moment to waste in her mind. His rough hands smoothed up the skin of her thigh before gripping the supple flesh of her backside. Nicki pressed into him deeper, feeling his erection. Drake reached between them, sliding fingers through her lips, coaxing wetness from her once more. She moaned into him, rocking her hips as he guided himself inside her. Nicki gasped, felling deliciously full. He pulled her close, reveling in the feeling of her body nestled around him. he wished this feeling could go on for eons. But wisdom & intuition let him know that this bliss would be short lived. So he picked up the pace, rocking her harder against him. She responded feverently, grinding harder, pushing him deeper inside. She too knew it would only be a few more sacred moments before…
“Moooooooooom!”
The shrill sound rumbling toward their bedroom effectively killed the romance. Nicki sighed to herself as she slid down, back into the space beside her husband, just barely covering her naked frame before the door burst open.
“Yeees, Malaki?” she answered, exasperated.
“They won’t stay out my room!” the young man whined, pointing to the two toddlers that were making their way onto the massive king sized bed & into their mother’s arms. Drake pulled the one nearest him into his lap.
“Were you bothering your brother?” he said, trying to be stern, which was hard. With sandy colored ringlets framing her face & almond shaped eyes that looked just like her mother’s, it was difficult to stay mad at her for very long.
“We wanted to help Ki write his song!” she said, her angelic little voice warming her father’s heart.
“Yeah! We wanted to help!” her twin brother chimed in as he snuggled closer to his mother. The preteen rolled his eyes.
“Listen, guys, Kiki needs to focus. Today is a big day for him. I know you wanna help, but he needs quiet, ok?”
“Ok.” The smaller children said in unison. Seconds later, they were off on their next adventure. Drake shifted his attention to his eldest child, pride nearly seeping from his pores.
“You ready for today, man?” he asked Malaki.
“Not really. I’m kinda nervous.”
Drake smirked.
“It’s your first performance. I’d be a little worried if you weren’t nervous. But you’re gonna be fine, man. Your mom & I are gonna be up there with you. Uncle Future. ”
The young man sighed, smoothing his hands over his closely cropped hair, exactly the way his father does.
“I know, I just…I don’t know. Can I go finish practicing?”
“Yeah, man go ahead.”
Soon, he was in his room, closing the door behind him. Drake sat back, sinking into the mound of pillows behind him. His wife reached over, intertwining her fingers with his.
“We have way too many kids.” He sighed before kissing the back of her hand.
“Oh really? Then why are we having another one?” She questioned, a hand on her bulging belly. Drake looked at her and smiled.
“Because making them is the best part.”
He stalked over to her, pulling her to him, eager to finish what they had already started.
“Good evening everyone, I’m ryan seacrest. And welcome to this years rockin new years eve! Im out here in los angeles reporting live. Were gonna have a great show for you tonight. The crowd is buzzing from excitement. So many stars. So many exciting things. You won’t wanna miss it…”
Malaki sat quietly in the corner, bobbing his head to the melody pumping through his headphones. They had gone through sound check 3 times, he was mic’d. The only thing left to do now was wait. Waiting was the worst part. No more warm ups. No more sound checks. No more preparing. He was ready. He peeked out at the crowd a few times while he waited. There were so many people. But he knew that already. The line was around the block when he pulled up this afternoon. People cheering, screaming. Beating on the hood of their black suv. It surprised him that some of them even knew him. Sure he had put a few small verses on the internet. And his dad had even let him play with a few tracks for his upcoming final album. To say that he was eager would be a vast understatement. He had done the research. Had watched the video clips. His father & uncle Noah were nothing short of genius. And he still couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that his mother was a global phenomenon. He wanted that. more than anything. Music was in his blood. Stage performing was the next level. Not just his annual appearances with his siblings at OVO Fest. No. this was real. Millions of people would be watching. He had to be focused. Had to stay ready.
The boy was running through his verse for the thousandth time when a hand clapped down on his shoulder. Malaki, shaken from his thoughts, looked up.
“Goht DAMN, you look just like yo daddy, boy.” His uncle Dwayne chuckled. Malaki rose to his feet to embrace the man.
“Hi uncle tune.” He said shyly.
“You ready to be out there in front of all them people?” wayne asked.
“I think so.” Malaki responded, trying to sound confident.
“Yeah, well you just make sure you stay on ya feet. Degrassi been off the air for 5 years now. We don’t need no Wheelchair Jimmy reprise.” The boy’s heart began to race. He knew all about his father’s infamous slip in New Jersey that ripped through his acl. And even though he didn’t know it, he heard his father on more than one occasion complaining about the pain he still felt after pick-up games on the court at their estate. That was one of the many things that scared him. Embarrassing himself in front of people was a major concern. But mostly, he was afraid of getting a taste of it, loving it & then never being able to do it again.
His father looked at him, his eyes soft.
“Don’t scare him like that, man. He’s gonna do fine. He’s like his mom that way.” Drake smiled.
“Of course he is.” His mother chimed in from across the room. The three adults began their usual banter & Malaki slipped off again; headphones tucked back around his ears. He hit play on his iPhone & let the melody carry him away.
The crowd was a gentle hush as the delicate melody began to build. Fog flooded the stage that was washed in deep blue & purple hues. Emotions & the crowd cheered as nicki ascended from beneath the stage, sitting atop an ornately carved white & silver upholstered throne; her pink Swarovski crystal covered mic in her right has as she sat poised & regal. Ready to deliver. The crowd cheered hysterically as she uttered the first line.
“I fly with the stars in the skies…”
Safaree emerged from the side of the stage, walking towards her, his hand extended & helped her from her throne. A sense of elation washed over as she hugged her dear friend. It was as if nothing had changed. Nicki moved effortlessly across the, not missing a beat, even though it had been nearly 5 years since she last touched a stage. Adrenaline was coursing through her as the hype builded, her & safaree working both sides of the stage simultaneously. The crowd sang along, word for word, hands waving & cellphones in the air, trying to capture this moment. The chorus rolled in & she was surprised to hear another voice join her own. She looked to her left to see shanell walking over to embrace her, wayne not far behind. She kissed each of them, happy that they were there to embrace this special moment with her. It wasn’t long after she heard her husbands voice. The crowd roared as he blazed on stage. He kissed her tenderly before burrowing through his verse, wayne at his side. His energy was electric & his movements were fluid. He was jumping & strutting like never before, all while still being absolutely adorable with her. When he uttered the final line of his verse, the beat stopped & the stage went black. The crowd was vibrating with effervescence as the beat began to build once more; lights lifting slowly, blue turning gradually to red.
“I want everybody to get out ya seat right now. if you here & you sittin down, get up. If you at home sittin down, get up. I want everybody on they feet!” drake urged.
Fog rose higher & the crowd was hysterical. Anticipation was building as the large screen behind them parted.
“I want everybody on their feet! Make some noise for my son, Malaki!!!!!”
In a flash he was racing out onto the stage, jumping right in to his verse.
“Round of applause as I step in here. Lettin’ the crowd know im the best in here.
A young spitter; the roman reincarnate. Givin me the mic? They don’t know what they started.”
The cheers & applauds couldn’t come fast enough. The kid’s bravado almost rivaled that of his father’s.
“Looks from my momma, skills from my dad. Creatin magic everytime my pen’s to the pad.
Lights on, camera flash, everybody watch me. im out of this world; beam me up scotty.
Still young but there's room for improvement. When I perfect my skills, they wont know what to do with it.
while all my peers home, playin red rover, I be up in the booth, playtime is over.”
Nicki was stunned silent. She was surprised at how thorough he was. He had really done his homework. She couldn’t believe this was her son. It was amazing to see just how hard he had worked on this. Drake was in a state of complete euphoria. They had practiced this for months. Every move, every step. Finally being on stage & going head to head, toe to toe with his son was surreal. Ad libbing for him, keeping the crowd enthused, it was all so magical. And to see the crowd so excited for him was more than he could ever wish for.
“Don’t get in trouble & I keep good grades. Got that grounded flow, I don’t play no games.
No cavities, cuz I stay sucka free. You so far gone in you think you fresh as me.
and to think im only 9 years old. Toronto in my blood, that’s why my rhymes so cold.
These rappers fallin off, yeah im the reason. Have em sittin’ on the bench til its comeback season.
Trust me tho, don’t wanna grow up fast. I want this forever; gotta make it last.
So we goin have a party tonight. Best believe, baby, it’s goin be a moment 4 life.”
Nicki did her best to keep it together during the bridge. She was on the brink of tears. The pride & love she felt from Malaki couldn’t be put into words. You would never have known this was his first time performing on stage. The song ended & as the crowd stood on their feet, applauding for them, their lives together raced through her mind. Finding out she was pregnant with their forth child. Giving birth to her twins; Aubrey & Aaliyah. Watching Malaki take his first step, say his first word. Watching him overcome all the obstacles with his health. Finally being through with maliah. All of the fights. All the sleepless nights from crying to sleepless nights from lovemaking. Performing together. Making music together. To that first night when he asked her to dance, looking over that balcony. All the way back to the very first night that she slammed the door in his face. They were both so different then. So much had happened. They had grown so much. Come so far. And in that moment, she was so greatful for all of it. all of the pain, struggle & strife made her appreciate the fact that they were even standing there today.
The tears rushed down her face as she smiled, waving at all of the amazing people that made this moment possible. Moments later, strong arms were around her, followed by smaller ones. Drake was behind her, kissing the crown of her head as Malaki &the twins hugged her tight. Her family. Fractured pieces of her heart brought back together once more to be made whole. And she closed her eyes, trying her best to capture this moment the crowd cheering, drake wayne & safaree all fawning over malaki’s performance; lifting him into the air as they carried him off stage, her smaller children giving her sweet kisses; all into her memory. As long as she lived she knew she would never feel a love like this ever again.
It had been nearly 45 minutes since they had walked off stage & the stream of people coming to congratulate them was never ending. So many amazing people had stopped him to tell him they enjoyed his performance, asking him if he had written the verse himself, wondering if he needed a label to be signed to. It was all very flattering, but it was late & Malaki wanted just about nothing more than to go home & get in his bed. All of the excitement was quickly turning to fatigue & he was almost positive that every flat surface was singing him a lullaby. They were almost back at their dressing room when his heart stopped. In front of him. Coming in his direction was his idol. Even though he & his father were good friends, Malaki had never actually met the man.
“You did real good out there little man! That was amazing.” The man said to him, hand outstretched. Malaki tentatively took it, using restraint to shake it lightly. He had studied all of the shows, listened to all of the music. But nothing compared to standing right in front of him.
“Thank you so much, Mr. Carter.” He all but whispered. The man laughed heartily as he slapped Malaki on the shoulder. The boy couldn’t move. Of all the people, he couldn’t believe he was standing this close to JAY-Z.
He was standing next to his parents in complete awe as they talked when out of the corner of his eyes, he saw the most beautiful girl that his eyes had ever fallen upon.
Her eyes were the color of rich earth, her skin a smooth dark amber, her curly hair bounced lively around her shoulders as she walked closer to him, accompanied by her mother. The older woman stopped by Mr. Carter’s side, kissing his cheek before extending her arms toward his parents. For a brief moment, they locked eyes, smiling at each other before the girl shyly turned away. Malaki did the same.
“Oh my god, is this Blue? She's gotten so big!” Nicki squealed in delight before smoothing the young girl’s face. The girl said hello quietly as her father slid his arm around her.
“Yeah! She’s growing up so fast.” The two women continued to gush about their children. Malaki simply looked on; his eyes unable to leave hers. Blue couldn’t stop the rose colored blush that ran up her neck.
“You did really good today.” She almost whispered. It was his turn to blush.
“Thank you.” He replied meekly, hand smoothing over his curls, identical to his father’s nervous habits.
“Were you scared?”
“Yeah, I was.”
The two continued to converse about music until a hand squeezed tight on Malaki’s shoulder.
“I’d say it’s about time we hit the road, man. What do you think?” Malaki hesitated before nodding his head slowly. The adults all said their goodbyes, taking turns hugging each other’s children.
“Aye! Let me know if you wanna get in the studio. I feel like we could create some real magic.” Drake looked down at his son.
“Whatchu think, man?” Malaki all but fainted. His throat went instantly dry. It was all he could do to nod his head.
Jay gave his signature laugh before putting his arm around his wife, heading in the opposite direction. Just before they turned the corner, Malaki looked back, hoping to catch the eye of the young girl at his mentor’s side. Luckily he did. She waved, smiling brightly before she was hidden from view. He hadn’t even noticed they had stopped moving until he looked up at his father, a knowing look on his face.
“what?” Malaki asked, trying to hide the embarrassment he was feeling. Drake simply shook his head.
“I could tell you it’s never gonna happen. But then I think about how alike we are & I know it’ll only make you wanna do it more.”
“I really don’t know what you’re talking about, dad.” Drake put his hands up in surrender, not wanting to push the issue further.
“Alright. Whatever you say, man.” Drake laughed. He guided his son along as he daydreamed about the girl with a smile as warm as sunshine.
